Overview
Echo Flow is an immersive light sculpture that creates the illusion of displayed infinite depth using custom-built electronics, generative visuals, and an LED grid suspended between two mirrors.
Designed and fabricated from the ground up, it blends lighting, custom fabrication, embedded hardware, and real-time visual effects into a single interactive installation.
Design & Fabrication
Echo Flow consists of two 4-foot square infinity mirrors, each approximately 3 inches deep, with a suspended 20×20 LED matrix at its center. The custom-built wooden frames provide a clean, minimal aesthetic while adding the rigidity needed to support the acrylic front panel.
To create a flat, screen-like surface, the LED net is tensioned using 20 hooks along each edge. A border of polyfill conceals the mounting hardware and softens the transition between the illuminated matrix and the mirrored enclosure, creating a cleaner visual presentation.
Interaction
The visuals on the screens are controlled in real time by a MIDI controller. Each fader controls the intensity of a base visual, while the corresponding knobs adjust its behavior and motion. Additional buttons layer effects such as strobing and masking, enabling dynamic compositions to be created on the fly.
To make the system intuitive to operate, I designed a custom TouchDesigner interface that provides a clear overview of the available scenes, controls, and active effects during live performance.
Technology
The LED matrix is driven by an external WLED controller, which receives real-time RGB data over DDP from a computer running TouchDesigner. Originally developed as part of a modular stage lighting system, this architecture allows the sculpture to integrate seamlessly with additional lighting fixtures.
Within TouchDesigner, I built a custom 3D lighting tool that maps a variety of light sources into a shared virtual space, enabling generative visuals to be distributed and synchronized across multiple physical installations.
